From 26-30 December a portion of the world's Lifesaving Elite are converging at Gran Canaria, Spain. This island in the Atlantic Ocean is the chosen backdrop for a international training camp organisaed by RFESS.
Goal: to share and exchange knowledge, train hard, have fun and endure some nice weather. Our own Tom Balsen Versteeg was also intvited, so we hooked up with him.

LifeSaving.nl: Hey Tom! What's up?
TBV: The sun! And that's what we are here for. No, just kidding. It is a amazing to be here, so nice to have this training camp here in the middle of winter. And it couldn't be better being among these other athletes.

LifeSaving.nl: Who is all there and why did you decide to accept this invitation?
TBV: I really want to get the latest insights in lifesaving techniques and learn as much as I can about how others train for this sport, so I had to go. The Lifesaving posterboy Fergus Eadie from New Zealand is here, everybody loves him. And the French superstars Magali Rousseau, Goroco Koindredi and Kevin Lasserre are sharing their secrets to world records here too. Plus, of course a lot of Spanish athletes, like Marco Plazuelo, Carlos Coronado Tejeda and Raul Marek, just to name a few legends.

LifeSaving.nl: It is starting to make sense now! So apart from the scenery and the group of athletes, how does a training day look like there?
TBV: Basically in the morning I choose to train with the athletes from other countries. In the afternoon we start with some dryland training before we jump in the pool. It's mostly focused on sprinting and we can also supplement our training with other sessions if we want.

As a matter of fact, I have to go now. Next sessions is about to start!

Lifesaving.nl: Thanks for your time and enjoy the remainder!
